Coffee Feature: Abra Coffee - Ethiopian Guji and Columbian Cauca

Abra means “open,” and Abra Coffee means “delicious.”

The founder and co-owner Paula runs Abra Coffee with her husband in Miami. Coffee runs in Paula’s blood, as she’s a 3rd generation roaster and spent years managing her family’s coffee farm in Brazil. Abra was founded in 2018 with a mission to serve as the gateway into the world of better coffee for their customers. She reached out to me for a review and was kind enough to send a couple samples of coffee and they did not disappoint! One Ethiopian Guji and one Columbian Cauca -- both categorized as medium but I think all signs point to light roasts.
Similar to past subscription-based coffee company reviews, I can only comment on the particular coffees, delivery, presentation, etc., not the subscription experience...

Let’s start with the delivery: In the box was one Old World and one New World coffee -- Ethiopian being the old world; Columbian, new world. This is how Abra classifies the origin of their coffees and how their subscription service is modeled. In addition, two cards gave all the details about each coffee’s origin, tasting notes, altitude and processing method. A great touch for the uber nerds like me who want to know everything about their cup of coffee or just enjoy learning something new. The bags display the roast date and are resealable with a one-way oxygen valve which is how ALL coffee should be bagged, if you ask me. 

Now the coffees: Ethiopian was my favorite, no surprise there, but the Columbian surprised me -- I liked it almost as much! The Ethiopian Guji had notes of jammy, fruit-forward strawberry, cherry and some light citrus notes -- a straightforward Guji, dependable when handled perfectly. The Columbian Cauca was sweet and nutty, with a hint of dark chocolate in the finish and a very light mouthfeel. 

To conclude, I’d have to give the Ethiopian a firm 5/5, and the Columbian a 4.5/5. If Abra continues producing coffees like the old world Ethiopian Guji, they’ll keep growing and getting the exposure they so valiantly deserve. The epitome of a small, minority+women-owned business -- definitely give them a try for a coffee subscription or just one-time purchases. Give them a follow and keep an eye on this company, they’re gonna go far!
